Knoel Scott (born July 18, 1956) is an American jazz saxophonist, composer, and bandleader whose work moves across baritone, tenor, and alto saxophone, as well as flute. A dynamic presence onstage, his performances often weave in singing and dance alongside his expansive instrumental playing.
Scott is best known for his longtime work with the visionary bandleader Sun Ra. An original member of the Sun Ra Arkestra, he continues to perform with the ensemble under the direction of Marshall Allen, carrying forward its boundary-breaking legacy of cosmic jazz, improvisation, and collective expression.
This conversation is incredibly heartwarming and soul-opening.
There is a joyful moment in the talk where Scott speaks about being 22 years old, listening to Sun Ra play the piano every single morning at 6 am:
”So I go [and ask him], Sun Ra, why are you on the piano every morning?
You’re always on the piano every morning at 6am, he looked at me and he said,
’people always asking the creator for things, everybody all over the world asking the creator for things: they want a wife, they want a good job, they want money, they want a car, they want an A in their class, everybody all over the world is always asking the creator for things, nobody ever gives the creator anything.
So, every morning, I give the creator a song.’ “
